First published in London in 1768, only weeks before Laurence Sterne’s death, A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy is one of the defining works of eighteenth-century English literature. Departing from the conventions of the traditional travel narrative, Sterne transformed the journey into an exploration of character, sensibility and human nature.
Travelling under the persona of Parson Yorick, Sterne moves through France with curiosity rather than purpose, finding significance not in monuments or grand landscapes but in conversation, gesture and fleeting encounters. Combining wit, delicacy and psychological observation, A Sentimental Journey became a central work of the Age of Sensibility and an important influence on later European fiction.

The text is set in Monotype Bell, derived from the celebrated roman cut for the publisher John Bell in the late eighteenth century and particularly well suited to Sterne’s elegant and conversational prose.
The sheets are printed on Century Laid, a mould-made pure cotton paper with traditional watermarks.
Each copy is hand bound in half leather with marbled paper-covered boards, with a gilt-decorated spine, marbled edges, hand-marbled endpapers and a custom-made slipcase.
