ALBERT BIERSTADT\"Signed Handwriiten Letter with Envelope 1901\"Description:
I’m selling a rare, handwritten, signed letter from the famous American landscape painter Albert Bierstadt, written in New York on 20th December 1901, just a few months before he died.
It’s addressed to Madame de Winton, offering his condolences after the death of her husband, Sir Francis de Winton – a British Army officer and colonial administrator who was involved in various parts of the empire, including West Africa and the Congo under King Leopold II.
The letter is handwritten and signed by Bierstadt on his own stationery, which has a nice gold-embossed monogram with a griffin. It also comes with the original envelope whichhas theNew York postmark from 1901.
It’s an interesting piece that brings together art, history, and a personal moment between two notable figures of the time.
Condition:
It has the usual postal fold lines, a little age-related toning and a couple of light marks, but nothing unexpected for a 123-year-old letter.
