Alexander Raymond Kellner (August 26, 1924 - May 3, 1996) became the first Athletics rookie pitcher since 1933 (Lefty Grove) to win 20 games when he went 20-12 in 1949, earning his only All-Star Game appearance. Alex signed with the Cincinnati Reds in 1941, but would not appear in the big leagues until 1948, with the Philadelphia A’s, after spending three years in the service During World War II, then a few years in the minors. Kellner spent most of his career with the Philadelphia/Kansas City Athletics (1948-1954/1955-1958), but finished his career with the Reds (1958) and the St. Louis Cardinals (1959). He won ten or more games in five of his 12 Major League seasons, but had the dubious honor of leading the league in losses twice and earned runs twice. Alex Kellner ended his career with a 101-112 record, had 99 complete games, nine shutouts and five saves, struck out 816 batters and posted a 4.41 career ERA in 321 games.
