UFO — Oriented Unclassified Meteorite Individual
Algeria 2026 — Possible Type 3 Chondrite — UV Reactive
Offered here is an exceptionally unusual, beautifully oriented meteorite individual recently found in Algeria in 2026.
This specimen immediately stands out for its remarkable “UFO” shape. Its broad, flattened profile, rounded leading surface, pronounced aerodynamic sculpting, and preserved fusion crust give it an unmistakable appearance unlike most ordinary meteorite individuals.
The specimen is currently unclassified, but its overall appearance and texture are suggestive of a possible unequilibrated/type 3 chondrite. A definitive classification would require laboratory analysis, so this is being offered as an unclassified probable chondritic meteorite rather than making an unsupported formal classification.
A Meteorite Shaped by Its Journey Through the Atmosphere
One of the most fascinating features of this specimen is its flight orientation.
When a meteoroid enters Earth's atmosphere at tremendous velocity, the air surrounding it becomes extremely hot and the surface begins to melt and ablate. Most meteorites tumble or change orientation during atmospheric flight, producing irregular patterns of ablation.
Occasionally, however, a meteoroid becomes aerodynamically stabilized and maintains a relatively consistent orientation during its descent. The resulting meteorite can develop a characteristic aerodynamic shape, with the forward-facing surface becoming rounded and sculpted while molten material flows across the surface and solidifies behind it. Scientific studies have demonstrated that the aerodynamic stability of certain shapes can produce this distinctive oriented-flight behavior.
This specimen displays several features that make its orientation particularly compelling, including its smoothly rounded aerodynamic profile, directional surface sculpting, and preserved fusion crust.
The spectacular shape is essentially a frozen record of its passage through Earth's atmosphere.
The “UFO” Shape
The nickname “UFO” seems almost unavoidable with this individual.
Viewed from different angles, the specimen has a distinctly saucer-like, flattened form, while the sides and underside reveal the irregular sculpting produced during atmospheric ablation.
The surface also displays areas of flow texture and regmaglypt-like sculpting. Regmaglypts are shallow depressions produced as hot gases and molten material interact with the meteorite's surface during atmospheric entry.
Rather than being simply a rounded rock, this individual preserves an unusual three-dimensional aerodynamic form.
UV FLUORESCENT REACTIVE
Another particularly interesting feature is its strong visible reaction under ultraviolet illumination, clearly shown in the accompanying photographs.
The fluorescent areas are especially striking against the dark fusion crust.
UV fluorescence by itself is not diagnostic of a meteorite classification, as fluorescence can result from particular minerals or secondary weathering products. However, it is an unusual and visually impressive characteristic of this specimen and makes it especially attractive for collectors who enjoy unusual meteorites and specimens with distinctive physical properties.
POSSIBLE TYPE 3 CHONDRITE
The specimen is currently unclassified, so its exact petrologic type has not been established.
Based on its appearance, texture, and apparent chondritic character, it may prove interesting as a possible Type 3 chondrite, representing relatively primitive material that has experienced comparatively limited thermal metamorphism on its parent body.
However, this should be considered provisional only until laboratory analysis is performed.
That uncertainty is part of what makes newly recovered meteorites fascinating: until they are cut, examined microscopically, and analyzed, their complete geological story remains hidden inside the stone.

A Truly Unusual Individual
There are plenty of meteorites with fusion crust.
There are plenty of meteorites with interesting shapes.
But an individual with this combination of extreme UFO-like morphology, apparent flight orientation, preserved fusion crust, unusual surface sculpting, and UV fluorescence is something considerably more distinctive.
A spectacular 2026 Algerian find and a fantastic candidate for anyone who appreciates unusual, naturally oriented meteorites.
