* One of the most interesting books in this collectionThe Worm and the Ring is notable for its publication history. The novel was based partly on Burgess’s experiences teaching at Banbury Grammar School. Shortly after publication, a libel action resulted in the book being withdrawn and unsold copies being destroyed/pulped. A substantially revised edition was subsequently issued in 1970. Consequently, surviving 1961 first-edition copies are considerably scarcer than ordinary Burgess titles.
