Offered for sale is a fascinating original 1899 antique scrapbook filled with period advertising, printing samples, business ephemera, illustrations, newspaper clippings, and other paper material, much of it associated with L. D. Udell, Stationer and Printer, 84–86 Bleecker Street, New York City.
This remarkable time capsule contains numerous pieces of late-19th-century commercial printing and advertising, including 1899 calendars, promotional cards, printer advertisements, business notices, illustrated advertising pieces, newspaper clippings, handwritten sketches, and other period ephemera. Several pieces specifically advertise L. D. Udell’s printing and stationery business and appear to showcase different styles of advertising and commercial printing available at the time.
Notable pieces pictured include the colorful “Will Return” advertising card, “Close the Door” sign, “Will Close Saturdays at One P.M.” advertisement, 1899 calendar advertisements, “Udell’s Secret of Success” advertising piece, printing and label advertisements, and numerous other examples.
The scrapbook appears to have been assembled around the turn of the century and offers an unusual glimpse into New York City printing, advertising, stationery, and commercial life in 1899. It would make an excellent addition to a collection of antique advertising, Victorian ephemera, New York City history, printing history, Bleecker Street memorabilia, or late-19th-century Americana.
CONDITION: This scrapbook is over 125 years old and is in very fragile, heavily worn antique condition. The binding, covers, and pages show substantial age-related deterioration, including brittleness, tears, losses, detached or loose areas, discoloration, staining, edge wear, and other damage consistent with its age and storage. Individual pieces of ephemera vary considerably in condition. Please carefully review all photographs for the most accurate representation of condition.
Due to the fragile nature of the scrapbook, it should be handled carefully. Nothing has been removed from the book, and it is being offered intact as found.
