Wonderful original mid-19th century mother and child portrait, believed to be a sixth-plate daguerreotype, dating to approximately the 1850s.
The seated woman holds a small child beside her in a studio portrait, surrounded by an elaborate embossed gilt/brass floral preserver. The clothing, photographic format and decorative mount are beautifully evocative of the early photographic era.
Measures approximately 2.6\" x 3\" overall.
This piece has survived roughly 170 years and absolutely looks it—in the best way. The image remains clearly recognizable but shows considerable age-related deterioration, spotting, oxidation/tarnish, surface marks and loss of contrast. The decorative metal surround has wear, darkening, spots and some bending/irregularity around the edges. The original case is no longer present.
Sold exactly as found and has not been cleaned or polished. Please examine all photographs closely for condition.
