Up for sale is a Mid 19th Century French Orjol Pottery Glazed Earthenware Water Jug! It measures 14 5/8” tall. This remarkable, authentically rustic antique French Orjol water jug (also known regionally as a cruche de Provence) dates to the mid 19th century (circa 1840–1870). Originating from the historic pottery workshops of Southern France—specifically the Languedoc and Lauragais regions between Béziers and Castelnaudary—this striking utilitarian vessel represents the true height of pre-industrial European folk art. This large-scale earthenware jug was thrown by hand on a manual kick-wheel, as evidenced by the deep concentric wire-cut swirl marks on its raw terracotta base. The artistry of this piece lies in its traditional, spontaneous slip-glazing technique, featuring a rich, lead-glazed yellow-ochre slip accented by loose, organic runs of copper-green glaze that bleed down the body. Notably, one side showcases a wavy exposure of the original chalky-gray undercoat (engobe), a mesmerizing workshop anomaly highly prized by collectors of antique pottery. Designed as an everyday household tool to haul fresh well water, the lower half of the terracotta body was intentionally left unglazed, allowing the porous clay to "sweat" and naturally cool the liquid inside through evaporation. Complete with its robust, hand-pulled side handle and integrated pouring spout, this 170-year-old piece carries an honest country patina and original firing irregularities that highlight its historic character. This substantial, statement-sized piece is ideal for interior design styling, making an exquisite visual anchor for a farmhouse kitchen island, rustic mantel piece, or entry hearth, serving as a standout specimen for collectors of primitive European slipware.
