A charming 19th-century equestrian oil painting on board, this wonderfully atmospheric work depicts a handsome white horse standing saddled and bridled in a country setting. Shown in profile, the horse is rendered with an appealing folk-art quality, its pale coat standing dramatically against the deep greens and earthy browns of the surrounding landscape. Fine painted details capture the bridle, bit, reins, saddle, stirrup, and tack, while a wooden fence and dense foliage in the background establish a distinctly rural sporting setting. The composition has the intimate character of a treasured portrait, suggesting a horse painted not simply as part of a landscape but as the principal subject of the work.Adding considerably to its decorative appeal is the elaborate period frame, which beautifully complements the painting. The broad frame features deeply embossed scrolling foliate and acanthus-style ornament over a finely textured ground, with geometric detailing along the outer edge and contrasting aged accents at the corners. Its wonderfully timeworn surface and intricate pattern give the entire piece the collected appearance associated with a 19th-century country house or gentleman's sporting interior. The overall framed piece measures approximately 16 inches wide, 13 inches high, and 1 inch deep, while the painting itself measures approximately 9.75 by 6.75 inches. There are several area of loss to the frame, The left frame border is attached securely but flexible when handled. Please review the photos for further condition assessment. The combination of equestrian subject matter, naïve or folk-art character, and richly ornamented frame makes this an especially appealing piece for an English country, traditional library, equestrian, sporting, or Ralph Lauren-inspired interior. Displayed among antique leather books, riding trophies, and other sporting objects, it would make a distinctive addition to a curated wall or shelf arrangement. A wonderfully evocative antique equestrian portrait with genuine age, character, and decorative presence.
