What I can show you in the photos: hand-tool marks, wear where a hand gripped the shaft, aged patina inside carved recesses (not a uniform stain), and dry, lightweight tropical hardwood. *DESIGN & CARVING*Three interlocking sections, joined by carved pegs and sockets — the traditional datu construction for transport and ritual use. Topped by a stacked-figure carving: a rider seated atop a singa (the mythical Batak guardian beast), with additional carved figures along the shaft.
The stacked-figure motif is the classic Tunggal Panaluan imagery — the staff as the World Tree, connecting the three layers of the Batak cosmos. On genuine datu staffs, figure recesses were sealed with pupuk, a ritually prepared substance — some of your piece\'s figures show filled recesses consistent with this tradition.
