A PIECE WITH A FAMILY HISTORYThis unusual Burmese palm-leaf manuscript has been in my
family for many years. My grandfather brought it back from one of his travels
in Asia. Unfortunately, no documents have survived recording exactly when or
where he acquired it.It has remained in the family ever since. What has always
fascinated me most is the contrast between the finely inscribed palm leaves,
the Buddhist imagery and the beautifully decorated wooden covers.I have now decided to pass the manuscript on and hope it
will find a new home with someone who appreciates Burmese culture, Buddhist art
and historic manuscripts.ABOUT THE MANUSCRIPTOffered for sale is an unusual and highly decorative Burmese
Buddhist palm-leaf manuscript, traditionally known as a Pesa / Pe-sar, from
Myanmar (Burma). The manuscript consists of several interconnected natural
palm leaves featuring finely handwritten Burmese script together with numerous
detailed illustrations. The illustrated sections depict Buddhist subjects, including
Buddha figures in various scenes and gestures, as well as other human and
mythological figures. Other sections are densely inscribed in multiple lines of
Burmese script.Particularly striking are the accompanying decorated wooden
covers. The upper protective cover is elaborately finished in red and black
with gold-coloured ornamentation and a distinctive central motif. Together with
the palm leaves and traditional cord binding, the covers give the manuscript a
strong decorative and cultural presence. An appealing collector\'s piece for anyone interested in
Buddhist art, Burmese culture, Southeast Asian manuscripts, Asian antiques or
religious art.DETAILSOrigin: Burma / MyanmarReligion: BuddhismType: Buddhist palm-leaf manuscript / Pesa / Pe-sarMaterial: Natural palm leaf, wood, lacquer, pigment, gold-coloured decoration
