A piece of New Hampshire history: an antique hand-colored photograph of the Old Man of the Mountain by Charles H. Sawyer, signed and titled in pencil on the mat and still in its original frame with the Sawyer Pictures store label on the back.
The Old Man of the Mountain was the famous granite profile high on Cannon Mountain in Franconia Notch, New Hampshire\'s state emblem for generations. It collapsed on May 3, 2003, so period images like this one are now a treasured record of a landmark that no longer exists.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Charles H. Sawyer (1868-1954) was one of the leading makers of hand-colored photographs in the early 20th century, alongside Wallace Nutting and David Davidson. Each photo was printed and then tinted by hand with watercolor. His studio moved from Farmington, Maine to 55 Pleasant Street, Concord, New Hampshire around 1920, the address on this label. The label also shows the original price of $1.50.

CONDITION
Good antique condition for its age. There are a few small white spots in the sky area of the image, and the mat has light, even toning. The frame has chipped, worn paint that adds to its rustic character. The backing paper has age staining, old pencil marks, and a small tear at one edge; the label is intact with a lifted corner.
