Rare Matched Set: 19th Century Helena J. Maguire Hunt Trophy Chromolithographs
This is an exceptional, investment-grade collection of four late-Victorian "trompe l'oeil" game trophy prints by the celebrated British artist Helena J. Maguire (1860–1909). Published by the renowned fine art firm Raphael Tuck & Sons, this set represents a scarce, pre-1893 first-edition printing produced in Saxony.
Historical Provenance & Rarity
As the London headquarters and historical archives of Raphael Tuck & Sons were completely destroyed during the Blitz in 1940, surviving pre-1893 first editions are exceptionally rare. This set remains an extraordinary, untouched Victorian time capsule; each lithograph has remained entirely undisturbed within its original presentation frame for over a century, protecting the artwork from dust and atmospheric wear.
Included Plates
1. "Hare and French Partridges"
2. "Wild Duck"
3. "Blackcock & Ptarmigan"
4. "Capercailzie & Pigeons"
Technical & Condition Details
The Prints: Masterful examples of late Victorian multi-stone lithography. The paper substrates are exceptionally clean and bright, free from the heavy foxing or fading often seen in antiques of this age.
The Glazing: The frames retain their original, period hand-blown "wavy" window glass. The glass features minor historic bubbles and structural lines characteristic of late 1800s manufacturing, confirming the authenticity of the set.
The Frames: Housed in the original, matching Victorian wood frames with a rich, traditional faux-woodgrain finish. The structures are strong, sturdy, and ready to hang.
Shipping & Handling
Due to the age, rarity, and presence of the original 19th-century wavy glass, this set will be professionally packed and fully insured to ensure its safe arrival.
