Antique Japanese kagami handled metal mirror featuring an elaborate raised gunbai (commander’s war fan) design surrounded by decorative cords, tassels and traditional Japanese motifs.The reverse is clearly inscribed 藤原光長 (Fujiwara Mitsunaga), a name associated with traditional Japanese mirror makers. Museum collections document handled mirrors bearing the Fujiwara Mitsunaga name, including examples from the Edo period. Because this name was used by successive generations, the exact maker generation and date of this particular mirror have not been independently authenticated.This is a large, substantial cast-metal example, appearing to be a traditional copper/bronze alloy. The decorated reverse has excellent relief detail over a finely textured background with naturally developed dark patina. The opposite side is metal rather than glass and originally functioned as the polished reflective surface.Approximate measurements:
