Fine Antique Japanese Kyo-Satsuma Yellow-Ground 8-Lobed Vase Lamp
Attributed to the Studio of Taizan Yohei IX — Meiji Period (circa 1890–1910)
Overview:Up for sale is a spectacular, collector-grade statement piece of late 19th-century Japanese ceramic art. This large 19-inch vessel is an authentic, magnificent example of Kyo-Satsuma (Awata Ware) originating from the highly celebrated Kyoto workshop of master potter Taizan Yohei IX. Originally crafted as a fine exhibition-style vase, it was masterfully converted into a luxury table lamp during the 20th century.
Physical & Sculptural Attributes:
- Form:Rare, hand-molded 8-lobed \"melon\" or faceted form. The undulating vertical ribs add incredible dimensional depth, beautifully capturing light across each individual panel.
- Palette & Gradient:Brilliant, glass-like Imperial Yellow enamel ground displaying a flawless vertical gradient (Bokashi) that softly fades into a tranquil sky blue at the lower profile.
- Artwork (Kachō-ga):Features hyper-detailed, fine-line brushwork depicting a striking green-headed passerine bird perched amidst vibrant royal peonies (the \"King of Flowers\"), butterflies, and gently drifting pink cherry blossoms (sakura). The contours of the petals, leaves, and stylized clouds are intricately highlighted with thick, reflective, high-carat gold gilding 19 inches in height (ceramic profile scale); overall height to top of harp is about 36 3/4\" (no finial included)
Lighting & Electrical Hardware Details:
- Socket Brand:High-quality vintage Leviton (Stamped \"Made in USA\", Rated 250W / 250V).
- Switch Type:Dual-circuit 3-Way Turn-Knob for standard 3-Way bulbs (dual-filament incandescent or 3-way dimmable LED equivalents). The knob turns sequentially to deliver three distinct brightness levels (Low, Medium, and High settings), followed by the Off setting.
- Aesthetic:The aged, natural brass socket, harp, and mounting fixtures gracefully complement the late 19th-century patina of the Taizan vessel.
Condition Report:This piece is in exceptional antique condition and has been meticulously preserved. The main ceramic body features NO structural cracks, NO body hairline fractures, and NO major damage. An authentic, tight network of microscopic crackle glaze is beautifully present across the unpainted ivory surfaces of the upper neck, as well as peering naturally beneath the lighter blue and white enamel washes.
As a century-old earthenware piece converted into a lamp, there are a few minor, historic surface glaze flakes/fleabites along the very edge of the unpainted bottom cream rim band right above the base mount (clearly documented in close-up photos). These are entirely stable, purely cosmetic, and typical of foot-ring wear on mounted pottery. The lamp conversion was cleanly executed via a pre-drilled base hole; all hardware fittings are tightly fixed, sturdy, and stable.
**Shipping, Packing, & Handling:**Due to the highly fragile nature of Meiji-era earthenware, this lamp will be professionally packed, heavily padded using premium materials, double-boxed, and shipped with full insurance and tracking.
*Please review the high-resolution photographs carefully, as they serve as the ultimate confirmation of the pristine condition and breathtaking master artistry of this heirloom piece.*
