Antique Japanese Ukiyo-e Bijin-ga Woodblock Print by Keisai Eisen, Edo Period: $499.99
“Beauty With a Pocket Mirror.”An antique Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock print attributed to Keisai Eisen (1790–1848), depicting an elegantly dressed woman admiring her reflection in a small hand mirror.Dating to approximately the 1830s, during Japan’s Edo period, this striking bijin-ga (picture of a beautiful woman) features Eisen’s characteristic attention to feminine beauty, elaborate hairstyles, and intricately patterned textiles. The composition is executed in the tall, narrow kakemono-e format, consisting of two vertically joined sheets of mulberry paper. The woman’s richly decorated kimono features intricate floral and geometric motifs in deep indigo blue, muted red, peach, and earthy brown. Her elaborate coiffure, delicate facial features, and finely rendered hairlines demonstrate the remarkable precision of traditional Japanese woodblock printing. The artist’s signature is visible in the upper-right portion of the composition.Dimensions: Approximately 73 × 25 cm (28.7 × 9.8 inches)Antique condition consistent with a print approaching 200 years of age, with visible age-related wear and imperfections. The print has overall paper toning, scattered discoloration and staining, and small surface abrasions. There are several tears and areas of fraying along the lower portion as well as edge wear and small paper losses. The original horizontal sheet join remains visible. The reverse exhibits additional discoloration, handwritten notations, and a small red-bordered paper inventory label. I believe the Japanese on the label translates to an inventory number. The pencil writing is a phonetic representation of the artist’s name. The print has undergone gentle aqueous cleaning and flattening to reduce accumulated discoloration and planar distortion. Some staining and age-related imperfections remain.Despite its condition, the composition retains appealing color, strong decorative detail, and exceptionally intricate woodblock linework. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description. Detailed images of the front, reverse, signature, sheet join, and areas of damage are provided. An evocative example of nineteenth-century Japanese printmaking, suitable for collectors of ukiyo-e, Edo-period art, and Japanese bijin-ga.Reasonable offers accepted. Let me know if you would like me to frame this in archival materials for you for the cost of shipping alone.
