* This is an authentic, heavily weathered 18th-century Japanese Buddhist folk art (Mingei) wood carving. It depicts Monju Bosatsu, the Bodhisattva of Transcendent Wisdom, seated upon his traditional mount, a roaring Shishi Guardian Lion. Sculpted from a single block of wood using the traditional ichiboku-zukuri method, this piece spent generations on a domestic altar or regional village shrine, resulting in an extraordinary, completely untouched historical patina.* The single-block construction (ichiboku-zukuri), traditionalgofun(oyster-shell gesso) primer, heavy incense-soot patina, and regionalMingei(folk art).* CONDITION:* Both arms of the Bodhisattva figure are missing.* The guardian lion has suffered a major historic impact break to the face; the front snout and upper jaw have split away down to the raw wood grain.* The underside of the solid-timber lion belly exhibits extensive natural age-checking (deep vertical core drying cracks) and old worm holes.* The carving remains fundamentally stable and solid, displaying a powerful \"wabi-sabi\" weathered aesthetic.
