Offering this rare antique Mason and Taylor wood jointed dolls were patented and produced around 1880 in Springfield, Vermont, evolving from the earlier mechanical wooden doll designs of Joel Ellis.
Made primarily in Springfield, Vermont, during the late 18th and early 19th-century American toy boom, these dolls belonged to the category of Springfield Woodens alongside Joel Ellis and Martin.
Connection to Joel Ellis: Founders Mason and Taylor had prior experience working with toy manufacturing and took over or built upon the foundational inventions of Joel Ellis.
These dolls featured spring-jointed limbs carved from rock maple wood, combined with characteristic pewter hands and lower feet (often painted in a signature Dutch blue) or cast pewter/papier-mache faces.
Lifelike Innovations: To create a more realistic expression, they overlaid composition or plaster onto expertly carved facial features before hand-painting them, introducing early swivel heads and fully movable joints.
Original Mason and Taylor dolls are exceptionally rare and only made for a short time from 1870-80 making them highly sought after by collectors.
