Antique China head dolls with red lines on their eyelids are typically high-quality 19th-century German dolls, often produced between the 1850s and 1880s. The red line, often paired with blue eyes, acts as painted eyeliner on the eyelid crease, signaling careful craftsmanship and aiding in identification as an early doll.
The thin red painted line above the blue eyes denotes the doll's age, often seen on "low brow" or "center part" hairstyle models.
Many of these dolls were made in Germany by companies like Conta & Boehme, which produced dolls from the 1850s onwards with heavy-lidded, painted eyes and distinctive red-lined creases.
These dolls often feature molded black hair, apple-red cheeks, and a stylized, pouty mouth.
Authentic examples often wear antique handmade clothes.
These dolls are highly collectible due to their detailed, hand-painted detail.
