A wonderful, rare primitive!
Nice antique condition hand forged oil lamp clock / German fire clock.From our research this seems to have been made in Germany in the late 1700\'s to early 1800\'s.Designed to tell time with the Roman numerals as the oil level dropped within the blown glass reservoir / font.As the lamp burned, the oil level would lower.The numbers start with 4pm and proceed through midnight until 4am, so one would add oil to the hour marker at which they would begin to burn the oil before using the lamp.
No chips or cracks in the glass.All the Roman numerals can still be clearly seen in the pewter strap around the fluted glass.The hinge works well on the lid over the wick compartment.
Normal marks, rubs and bends here and there in the pewter (see closeups).Some bends and small splits in the pewter base, which do not affect the stability (see closeups).We have not cleaned the lamp so that you can decide how much cleaning you\'d like to do, if any.
This clock was purchased at sale at Pook & Pook in Pennsylvania, which is a high-end antique sale house. Their sticker was still on the piece when we acquired it from a Virginia estate.
