Antique Podmore Walker Washington Vase Mulberry Transferware Tureen Lid 1850s:
$89.95

Authentic mid-19th-century Podmore, Walker & Co. Washington Vase pattern tureen or covered vegetable-dish lid, made in Tunstall, Staffordshire, England.

This octagonal lid is decorated in a rich black-to-deep-mulberry transfer with romantic architectural landscapes, trees, water, distant buildings, ornamental foliage and elaborate framed scenic reserves. The raised shell-and-scroll finial and densely decorated border give it the dramatic appearance collectors seek in Victorian Staffordshire transferware.

The Washington Vase pattern is documented as a Podmore, Walker & Co. design and is particularly recognized for its classical urn imagery, romantic landscapes and ornate floral and scenic borders. It was produced in colors including mulberry and light blue. Serving pieces often use selected portions of the larger pattern to fit curved lids, tureens and other specialized forms.

Podmore, Walker & Co. used its initials on wares from approximately 1834 to 1856, before Enoch Wedgwood’s name was incorporated into the partnership. This lid most likely dates from the 1840s–1850s.

Approximate Measurements

Approximately 8 inches across

Approximately 4½ inches high, including the finial

Octagonal form

Lid only; matching tureen base is not included

Condition

Antique condition with wear consistent with approximately 170 years of age. There are small chips and nicks along portions of the rim, scattered discoloration, glaze wear, scratches, firing irregularities and areas where the transfer decoration has softened with age.

The raised finial remains attached, and the lid retains strong visual presence despite the condition issues. It is best suited as a replacement for an existing Washington Vase tureen, a decorative cabinet piece or an addition to a collection of black, mulberry and flow transferware.

The dark landscapes and softened glaze still carry the atmosphere of a Victorian table, preserving a small fragment of the rooms and gatherings it once served.
