  • Tramp art is a working-class folk art movement from the late 19th through the mid-20th century (roughly the 1870s to the 1940s) where makers used a pocketknife to chip-carve, notch, and layer scraps of wood into decorative and functional objects.
  • AAFA- American ART Folk ART
  • Authentic true Americana
  • This incredibly rare box. Could have been made around 1880 to 1890, its a extraordinary richly decorated example of Tramp ART boxes. The object is rectangular in shape and has a hinged lid on top. The Box is covered all over with stepped cubic shapes so typical of tramp art. Thus, the box can be viewed from 3 sides. The box later was lined with black wool felt in order to keep the inside contents clean and fresh.
  • This box is an incredible rarity and would grace any interior, as it is a very richly decorated object. Great size to store cherished items.
  • The Cigar Box Catalyst: The style was heavily fueled by the 1864 U.S. Internal Revenue Service Civil War tax laws, which required cigars to be sold in standardized, non-reusable wooden boxes made of fine woods like Spanish cedar and mahogany. This created a massive, free supply of thin scrap wood.
  • Who Actually Made It: Despite the name, historical research has shown that tramp art was rarely made by homeless wanderers or hobos. Instead, it was crafted by settled working-class family men, farmers, factory workers, immigrants, and tradesmen using it as a domestic or devotional pastime—often compared to men's quilting.
  • Where the Name Came From: The term "tramp art" is a misnomer that did not appear or stick until decades later (gaining traction around the 1950s) after early collectors and magazines romanticized the idea of itinerant "tramps" whittling around campfires.
  • Notching and Layering: Artists cut V-shaped chips into the edges of wood pieces and stacked them in diminishing, pyramidal layers over a hidden pine or poplar skeleton.
  • Decline: The art form waned by the mid-20th century as wooden cigar boxes were largely replaced by cardboard and cigarettes. Today, authentic antique pieces are celebrated as pure American folk art, with rare works commanding high prices
