Up for sale is a beautifully preserved, museum-worthy piece of Middle Eastern bathing history: an authentic, hand-crafted Turkish Hammam bath house soap box dating back to the late 19th or early 20th century.
This functional antiquity features a classic oval-domed structure expertly hammered out of thick sheet copper. The exterior body and lid are meticulously adorned with hand-stamped folk leaf/tree motifs, showcasing the organic charm of true village craftsmanship.
Key Structural & Historical Details:
Native Perforated Drainage: The bottom panel features hand-punched drainage holes, historically engineered inside steam baths to keep high-value olive oil soap bars dry and solid between uses.
Internal Tinning Lining:
The interior retains its original hand-applied silvery tin coating, a traditional process used to prevent damp soap and fats from reacting dangerously with raw copper.
Intact Functional Hardware:
Equipped with its original robust, flat-forged carrying handle and primitive iron swing latch that securely seats across the loop peg. The continuous heavy rear tube-hinge is structural, strong, and opens fully.
Condition Report:
- Excellent antique condition with no structural tears or missing elements. The metal showcases a spectacular, natural, unpolished deep-rose copper patina accented with muted grey and green verdigris highlights in the deep stampings. We have left this item unpolished to preserve its historical integrity and market value for collectors. We did clean and placed a coating of Renaissance Micro-Crystalline Wax polish after wiping with a damp soapy cloth and rinsed with plenty of water. It was then completely dried with air dryer.
