A striking mid-19th-century Victorian Berlin woolwork needlepoint, dating approximately c.1850–1860, featuring a romantic castle landscape surrounded by an elaborate border of scrolling roses and foliage. Worked by hand in wool on open canvas, the central scene includes architecture, water, figures, animals and birds in softly aged shades of cream, red, blue, green and gold. The piece measures approximately 20 x 18 inches framed and retains a wonderfully authentic timeworn appearance.
Berlin woolwork reached the height of its popularity during the Victorian era, particularly from the 1840s through the 1860s, when richly colored pictorial patterns were stitched for display in fashionable interiors. This example is especially appealing because it combines a detailed castle landscape with a full floral border, rather than the simpler floral motifs often encountered today. Stitched initials appear near the lower center. Condition is antique and unrestored, with fading, discoloration and notable loss to the woolwork/canvas at the lower-right edge, as clearly shown in the photographs.
