Landscape with a Water Mill
Antique French landscape with a water mill, attributed to Alexandre Pau de Saint-Martin, oil on board laid down on canvas, inscribed St Martin and dated 1807 on the reverse, unframed.
A stone mill with a tiled roof stands beside a wooden footbridge over the water, half hidden by trees and undergrowth, under a sky of broken cloud. The reverse is inscribed St Martin and dated 1807. Until 1812 the painter exhibited at the Paris Salon as Saint-Martin, and only from 1814 as Pau de Saint-Martin, so the form of the name matches the year written beside it. Attributed to means the inscription supports his name, but it is not a signature on the painting itself.
