Offered for sale is an authentic natural emerald recovered from the legendary Spanish treasure galleon Nuestra Señora de Atocha, which sank during a hurricane off the Florida Keys on September 6, 1622.
This remarkable emerald was recovered by Mel Fisher’s Treasure Salvors, Inc. and is accompanied by its original Certificate of Authenticity and original identification tag.
Unlike loose emeralds available on today’s market, this stone carries an extraordinary historical provenance dating back more than four centuries.

Historical Background
The Spanish treasure galleon Nuestra Señora de Atocha was one of the richest ships in the Tierra Firme Fleet, carrying silver, gold, emeralds, jewelry, and other treasures from the New World back to Spain.
On September 6, 1622, the fleet encountered a devastating hurricane off the Florida Keys. The Atocha struck a reef and sank with nearly all hands and an enormous cargo of treasure.
After more than three centuries beneath the sea, legendary treasure hunter Mel Fisher and Treasure Salvors, Inc. located the primary wreck site on July 20, 1985, recovering one of the most significant treasure discoveries in modern history.
The emeralds aboard the Atocha originally came from the famous Muzo mines of Colombia, regarded for centuries as producing some of the world’s finest emeralds. These stones completed an extraordinary journey—from the mines of South America, across the Atlantic aboard the Spanish fleet, to the ocean floor for over 360 years before finally being recovered.
Owning an authenticated Atocha emerald is owning a tangible piece of world history.

This emerald comes from the extensive estate of a respected East Coast collector who assembled an exceptional collection of Atocha artifacts over many years.
I have previously sold numerous authenticated Atocha artifacts and emeralds from this collection on behalf of the family. I have been given permission to continue offering select pieces to collectors who appreciate their historical significance.
