Aztec Calendar / Cuauhtémoc 1 oz .999 Fine Copper Round

This copper round has two richly detailed designs. One side shows Cuauhtémoc, the last emperor of the Aztecs. The other side shows the Aztec Calendar Stone. The detail is sharp on both sides, and the coppery finish is bright.

Important: weight is 1 AVOIRDUPOIS ounce, not troy
This round weighs one avoirdupois ounce, which is about 28.35 grams. That is the standard ounce used for everyday weights in the U.S. A troy ounce (about 31.1 g) is the unit used for precious metals, and this round is lighter than that. Please keep this in mind when you compare it to other listings.

Obverse – Cuauhtémoc
The obverse shows a profile portrait of Cuauhtémoc in a feathered headdress. Around it are the words “ONE OUNCE” and “.999 FINE COPPER,” inside a stepped border.

Cuauhtémoc, whose name is often translated as “Descending Eagle,” became the last ruler of Tenochtitlan in 1520. He was still a young man. He led the city’s defense during the Spanish siege of 1521. He was captured when Tenochtitlan fell and was later executed in 1525. Today he is honored throughout Mexico as a national symbol of courage and resistance.

Reverse – The Aztec Calendar (Sun Stone)
The reverse shows the famous Aztec Calendar Stone, also called the Piedra del Sol. The original is a huge carved basalt disc, nearly 12 feet across and weighing about 24 tons. It was carved in the decades before the Spanish conquest. It was rediscovered in 1790 under Mexico City’s main plaza and is now one of the treasures of Mexico’s National Museum of Anthropology.

At its center is a face, usually identified as a sun or earth deity. Around the face are symbols of the four previous world ages, a ring of the 20 day signs, and solar rays. Two fire serpents encircle the outer edge. The stone shows how the Aztecs understood time, the cosmos and the cycles of creation.
