Airbus A320-211, serial number 282, operated by Northwest Airlines as N318US. The aircraft joined Northwest's Airbus narrowbody fleet as the airline modernized beyond older Boeing 727 and McDonnell Douglas equipment. Powered by two CFM International CFM56 engines, N318US operated domestic and regional services throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The A320 introduced fly-by-wire controls and extensive cockpit commonality to Northwest's fleet while offering improved efficiency and passenger comfort. Following Northwest's merger with Delta Air Lines, N318US became part of Delta's fleet, where former Northwest A319 and A320 aircraft continued serving the carrier's large domestic network.
Airbus A320 Designed as a short/medium range narrow-body airliner to compete with the Boeing 737, the Airbus A320 was first flown on February 22nd, 1987. The A320 features side stick controllers and glass cockpit and was the world's first airliner to use use a digital fly-by-wire control system. Controversially, the software includes "flight envelope protection" to prevent the pilot from exceeding safe flight parameters. The highly successful design rapidly led to the development of the shortened-fuselage A318 and A319, and lengthened-fuselage A321 derivatives. More than 4,500 of the A320 family have been produced, almost all of which are still in active service.
