Barbara Lavallee’s whimsical paintings depicting Alaskan life
have made her one of the most celebrated artists in the state.
She was born in Iowa, moved to Alaska in 1970 to teach art
at the Mt. Edgecumbe Boarding School in Sitka. She immersed
herself in the diverse indigenous cultures of her students.
She has been a professional artist since 1976. Her paintings
reflect her interest in people; how they live and what they do.
