1933 & 1935 Champion, Kin to Mister MulliganDESCRIPTIONVintage 8x10 photograph of the Howard DGA-4 "Mike," registration NR55Y, race number 38, on the ramp at the National Air Races.Mike was designed, owned, and raced by Ben "Benny" Howard, one of only two DGA-4/DGA-5 racers he built in 1932, the other being sister ship "Ike," later famous as the Chevrolet-sponsored "Miss Chevrolet."Mike had its own strong competitive record in its own right. Pilot Roy Minor dominated the 1933 National and International Air Races in Mike, taking four firsts, two seconds, and additional placings across the season, and in 1935, the year newspapers nicknamed the "Benny Howard National Air Races," Harold Neumann flew Mike to three first-place finishes the same season Howard's follow-up design, the DGA-6 "Mister Mulligan," became the only aircraft ever to win both the Bendix and Thompson Trophies.That DGA-6 also launched Howard's entire commercial DGA-8 through DGA-15 aircraft line.Mike raced the National Air Races circuit from 1932 through 1936 and, per the vintage caption card affixed to the back of this print, carried multiple race numbers over the course of its career.The photograph shows the aircraft parked on the tarmac with two onlookers near the wingtip, giving it a candid, ramp-side feel.This photograph is a period-style archival print pulled from the original negative, dated via the photo lab stamp on the reverse.A typed caption card is also affixed to the back, crediting photographer D.
