Every other antique livestock lithograph shows the animal from the side. This C. Palmer shows a dark horned bull walking directly toward you, a frontal composition that\'s unusual in 19th-century livestock portraiture and gives it real visual energy. Palmer was the go-to livestock artist for American agricultural herd books and publications of the 1870s, and his work in the same series includes the Holstein, Jersey, and Berkshire prints also in my shop. This one has no caption or registration number, suggesting it served an illustrative rather than registry purpose, and the open landscape setting with no barn or architectural backdrop is also distinct from the other Palmer pieces. The breed appears to be Devon or Kerry based on the compact, uniformly dark body and small horns. The stipple technique is the same as the rest of the series and the draftsmanship is excellent, especially the direct eye contact. Image area approximately 4.5\" x 3.5\" on original period paper with cream backing. Total matted size is 16 x 12 inches in a white mat, ready to frame.
