Britannia by William Camden published by George Bishop and John Norton in London, England, 1607. The 1607 edition is the sixth edition, the first edition being published in 1586.
An excellent copy of Camden\'s \"Britannia\", a great survey of the history and topography of Great Britain and Island. Camden\'s stated intent in writing \"Britannia\" was to \"restore antiquity to Britaine, and Britain to his antiquity\". This edition is the first to contain engravings of the counties of England, but unfortunately, all the original maps have been removed at some prior date. \"Britannia\" is a fascinating work that combines the disciplines of history, antiquarianism, and geography providing more than an account of the past of Britain and Ireland but also a description of its present. It is a widely read and printed work, exerting a great influence on the following centuries of scholarship and historical imaginings.
Please note: this book is lacking the original maps and some text.
Condition: The book is in good condition. Binding has heavy wear, corners worn down, shedding bits of leather, some scratches, spine especially rubbed, overall still intact, good overall, and internally sound. Binding likely 17th or early 18th century, could be original. Pages are good, some warpage, spotting in places, occasionally marginal note in ink. Missing all maps and some text. See photos for more detail.
