Beekeepers in the USA can save annually using B402, a new biological treatment to control waxmoths. The new wax moth control product, B402 (also known as Certan), uses Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), a bacterium commonly found in nature that selectively kills wax moths at the larval stage. The moths destroy honeybee wax combs and even the structure of hives, causingwidespread damage and even colony losses for beekeepers.

B402offers efficacy of up to 100% against wax moth larvae.B402has recently been approved for use with honey bee colonies by the USA Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and many individual states have already confirmed that registration.B402is safe to use and harmless to beneficial insects and pollinators. It leaves no chemical residues in wax or honey; only a single application is necessary to provide complete protection.

B402is a preventative treatment thatcontrols wax moth. It is a safe and environmentally friendly product based on aconcentrated solution of Bacillus thuringiensis,a microorganism.

Use B402 after the honey harvest, when the frames are stored, to kill young wax moth larvae. Use it BEFORE a wax moth infestation. A single application provides very high efficacy against wax moths right up through the following season. B402 comes in a 5 oz container.

Key Facts

  • B402 is a concentrated solution of Bacillusthuringiensis subspecies aizawai, a microorganism, harmless to man &honeybee alike.
  • 100% efficacy against the larvae of the wax moth (Galleria mellonella).
  • A 100% biological product that leaves no residue inwax or honey, does not alter the taste of honey, and is environmentallyfriendly.

  • Dilute with water to 5% (1 volume of B402 to 19 volumes of water)
  • Once diluted, use the solution the same day.

Safety of B402

Unlike paradichlorobenzene, a toxic product forofferden in some countries for any agricultural use,B402 doesnot leaveany residue in the wax or the honey.

B402is harmless to bee larvae and adult bees.

Aizawai serotype 7 (present inB402)is the sole variety of Bacillus thuringiensisthat gives excellent results against wax moths. Some other types of Bacillus thuringiensis are toxic to humans andbees.
