Generally, nephrite jades from China are named after their places of origin. Qiemo jade, for example, refers to nephrite jade produced in Qiemo County, Bazhou Prefecture, Xinjiang.
Most of the best nephrite jade in today's market comes from Qiemo. The main types of Qiemo jade include: sugar white jade, sugar jade, mutton-fat white jade, white jade, green jade, cyan-white jade, and yellow jade, with a small amount of high-quality Gobi jade and Mida jade.
The most famous type of Qiemo jade is sugar white jade. The best quality sugar white jade produced so far is from Qiemo County, generally better than sugar white jade from other sources. Additionally, sugar cyan-white jade has a larger output. Most of the mountain materials from Qiemo contain 'sugar'. Qiemo jade is relatively fine in quality, with good oiliness, making it the best mountain sourced jade, secondary only to river sourced jade.
Characteristics of Qiemo jade: often accompanied by 'sugar' colors, which tend to aggregate; very oily and delicate in texture; vibrant colors, visually pleasing; high hardness, with slightly less toughness in yellowish material, but otherwise excellent. Even in sugar jades, Qiemo's old pits with red 'sugar' still leads the pack.
