As of the time of this listing, OCRE lists just six examples of the type, with sale archives/ACSearch adding just ONE additional example; Nummus-Bible provides us with a further seven specimens by which to compare; interestinly, none of the known examples for Constans has the same obverse portrait style, with some having the \'trademark\' Trier look and others being quite crude in their execution, making this one of the rarer cases where we are able to see the varying skill level of each mint \'team\'
The mintmark of TRS allows us to determine that this is from the 2nd emission as TRS would be Trier Secvnda; RIC VIII Trier 85 also appears to be the first type issued for Constans after the death of Constantine in AD 337, and as such is among the first coins to drop NOB CAES or similar for AVG, signifying that Constans is now an Augustus; despite the popular belief that IVL signified Junior, it does not, as FL IVL is simply \'Flavius Julius\'; however there ARE coins issued for Constans by Constantine II with IVN in the legend, which absolute signifies Junior, especially when we see the legend end \'IVN AVG\' quite literally meaning Junior Augustus
As stated above, this coin is from the collection of the late Carl-Friedrich Zschucke, who passed away in 2023; he was a German doctor, coin collector and numismatist who specialized in Roman coinage struck in Germany, with his works providing both collectors and historians alike with the most complete reference works to date for the Roman mints of Cologne and Trier; Dr Zschucke is known to have published two books on Roman Trier and Germany, donating 875 coins published in the book to the Berlin Coin Cabinet and 2010 he also donated his special collection of Trier bronze coinage to the Cabinet as well
