This painting is inspired by the famous Gian Lorenzo Bernini 1652 life-size marble sculpture,“L’Estasi di Santa Teresa”. Of the hundreds of artist interpretations that have since paid homage to that original sculpture, this piece is an obviously darker and more twisted version. Here we see Jesus Christ doing battle against the Devil with Saint Theresa caught in the middle, having slipped in excrement (see left sneaker), in a puddle of her own urine. Or is it the Devil\'s? And she\'s presumably in a state of ecstasy. Crayons are strewn. Knee scraped and bleeding.
It’s supposed to depict a moment where divinity intrudes on an earthly body. Some say a melding of sensual and spiritual pleasure.
The artist, Danny Malbeouf, shared hundreds of his original works online under the persona,“Kolaboy.” Although he has a web site, and it has a decent sampling of his artwork, the true definitive archive of his work can be found on the DeviantArt web site, of all places. It is a massive body of work.
