SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Simmons on the title page in the year of publication: \"Dawn Langley Simmons, for my friend [difficult to discern] with love 1995.\" Simmons was born male (with the name Gordon Langley Hall), and lived a private life as a woman until age 30, when she came out and lived openly as a woman. Simmons was the daughter of two servants in the employ of Harold Nicolson and Vita Sackville-West. Virginia Woolf, who knew Simmons from childhood, eventually wrote the novel \"Orlando,\" which bears a number of resemblances to Simmons\' life story. Simmons spent many years in Charleston, which is the central focus of this autobiography. Simmons became very close to English actress Margaret Rutherford, who served as a mother figure to Simmons from the late 1950s until her death. Fine / fine.
