There is very little wear/damage to this 127-year-old delicate magazine. The back cover has a small rip and there are smaller rips and scuffs in a few interior spots. The cover art, by CW Traver, is frameable and has an Easter theme.
Demorest\'s Family Magazine,titledMme. Demorest\'s Mirror of Fashions, a quarterly publication, in 1860, became monthly in 1863, attained its expanded title in 1864 -Demorest\'s Illustrated Monthly- after Demorest acquiredNew York Illustrated Newsand merged it into the publication. \"Illustrated\" was dropped from the title in 1865 and it was calledDemorest\'s Monthly Magazine. In 1879 it was retitledDemorest\'s Family Magazine. The last issue was in October,1899.
The magazine, based in the United States, was published by William Jennings Demorest. Jane Cunningham Croly served as editor from 1860 to 1887. She helped it advocate for female education and employment. Other people who wrote for the paper included Louisa May Alcott and Julia Ward Howe. The paper was part of Demorest and his wife Ellen Louise Demorest\'s retail store, publishing, and dress pattern business empire.
In addition to illustrations of fashion (plates), a dress pattern was stapled into editions of the publication. It covered fashions worn by Empress Eugenie. It included advertisements for Demorest cosmetics and corsets. Illustrations, including elaborate covers, were created from wood engravings. Ellen Louise Demorest was involved with the New York Medical College for Women, Welcome Lodging House for Women and Children, Sorosis club for women, and advocated for women workers including African Americans.
