OOAK handcrafted one-inch scale square pianoforte with matching bench by miniature artisan Dolores V. Rawding (D.V.R.). The underside is inscribed “Harrison Gray Otis House, Boston, ca. 1790” and bears Rawding’s DVR mark. The signature on this piece was verified directly by the International Guild of Miniature Artisans (IGMA).
This miniature represents a late-18th-century square pianoforte associated with the Harrison Gray Otis House in Boston. Historic New England documentation shows a full-size square piano displayed in the withdrawing room of the First Harrison Gray Otis House. The “ca. 1790” inscription identifies the historical period represented by Rawding’s reproduction and is not the date the miniature was made.
The piano features individually detailed black and white keys, a reddish-brown wood finish, fine contrasting line inlay throughout the case, tapered legs with gold-tone floral accents, brass-tone hardware, a central pedal assembly, and multiple hinged sections. Includes the matching four-legged bench.
Dolores V. Rawding began creating one-inch-scale miniatures in 1976 and specialized in period furniture. She taught miniature woodworking and tool-handling techniques at museum schools, N.A.M.E. shows, Tiny Treasures in Boston, Miniature Makers shows, and private clubs. Her work was also featured in The Scale Cabinetmaker.
