A heavy potted yet delightful in its overall form, thisceladon piece is covered with deep green glaze suffused with bubbles that canbe felt like a ‘cold smooth jade’ with dark brown large crackles that coveredthe entire piece except for the base of the three cabriole legs. The unglazed baseof the three splayed legs is covered with a brown ochre with kiln grit adheredto it, exposing a dark brown body beneath.
The elegant form for this censer is derived from bronzemetal works especially with the ‘ribs’ that run vertically along the externalcavetto of each leg. Punctured holes can be observed on the inner underside to allowair escape during firing to maintain the integrity of this piece. Chinesewriting has described Guan ware such as in this example to be ‘iron foot and purplemouth’.
Provenance: Acquired from the Riau Islands which was theepicenter for spice trading and religious exchange especially Buddhism in the13th/14th century.
