A fine heavy potted greenish olive green octagonal “bamboo”Longquan vase, the celadon glaze suffused with fine bubbles covered the entirepiece including the interior and the foot base, except the foot rim with coldsmooth feel almost jade-like. The unglazed foot is burnt brown with burntorange along the sides of the glaze edges. Micro images show that the body pasteis of fine grey.
The vase is supported with a short foot rising to anoctagonal body with raised horizontal side and further rising to a cylindricallong neck with two similar raised horizontal sides representing the notches ofa bamboo. Above the neck is a flaring disc-shaped rounded mouth with thickendmouth rim.
The Japanese who revered Chinese antiquities particularlythe 13th century Longquan called these wares “karamono”, and haveadopted the new Buddhist Zen where shapes of wares took into the naturalisticfeature with simplicity yet profound with aesthetics itself. An example forsuch is this rare vase with excellent quality and condition.
Provenance: This piece was an accidental discovery in WestJava Banten once Sunda Kingdom rule which was predominantly Buddhist.
