Echinacea is a genus of seven species, all endemic to eastern and central North America. Coneflowers bloom from June to August, with some sporadic blooms later. They attract butterflies and other insect pollinators. Good fresh cut or dried flower. The blooms last beautifully and are excellent in both fresh-cut and dried arrangements. The dead flower stems remain erect well into winter, and if the flower heads are not removed, the blackened cones can attract goldfinches, while the seeds in the large cone at the center of the flower head nourish birds. Long lived in the garden.
‘Cheyenne Spirit’ was introduced by Kieft-Pro Seeds in 2012. It is a well-branched, hardy coneflower that won the 2013 AAS (All-America Selections®) award and Europe\'s FleuroSelect Gold Medal for garden performance. It blooms in its first year across a wide range of colors, including purple, pink, red, orange, yellow, cream, or white ray flowers with a brown cone. It grows 2 to 2.5 feet tall and 1 to 2 feet wide, blooming from June to August with some sporadic blooms later. It is attractive to butterflies and other insect pollinators. It makes a good fresh cut or dried flower. The dead flower stems stay upright well into winter, and if the flower heads are not removed, the blackened cones may be visited by goldfinches or other birds that feed on the seeds. Growing tips:Echinacea requires well-drained, fertile soil. Water deeply and regularly during the first growing season to establish an extensive root system. Once established, reduce frequency; tolerates moderate drought. Remove spent blooms to prolong the flowering season. Prune back old foliage and apply fertilizer in early spring before new growth emerges.
