Original publisher’s olive-gray cloth, pictorially decorated on the upper cover with a striking medieval knight design after Joseph C. Leyendecker, printed in black and orange; spine lettered in black. Top edge trimmed, fore edge and bottom untrimmed. Illustrated with color plates by Leyendecker, including frontispiece.
A sound, honest copy. The cloth shows general age-toning and light soiling, with minor rubbing at the extremities. Inner hinges cracked though the text block remains firmly attached. Pages are clean and supple, with scattered light toning consistent with age, and no foxing of note. No ownership marks or inscriptions observed.
An excellent example of an early twentieth-century historical romance, notable for its Leyendecker illustrations and dramatic Arts and Crafts–influenced cover design. Ridolfo is set in Renaissance Italy and reflects the period’s fascination with medievalism and moral struggle, themes echoed vividly in the artwork.
An attractive copy of an increasingly scarce McClurg illustrated first edition, desirable both for its literary content and its visual appeal.
