Emperor Nerva ruled Rome from 96 to 98 CE, becoming emperor after the assassination of Domitian. An experienced statesman, he was chosen by the Senate to restore stability and improve relations between the emperor and the governing class. Though his short reign faced challenges, including a revolt by the Praetorian Guard, Nerva managed to maintain order. His most important act was adopting Trajan, a respected general, as his heir—ensuring a peaceful succession. Nerva’s rule marked the beginning of the era of the “Five Good Emperors.”
