Very good. The volume is sound and square, with a firm binding. The natural linen cloth shows a few scuffs to the spine. The red and black printed spine label remains legible. The text block and page edges are evenly toned. A small, neatly written previous owner’s name appears on the front free endpaper. There are a couple very small homes in the gutter of the front endpapers. The remainder of the book is unmarked and in excellent condition. The facsimile dust jacket & the matching facsimile slipcase are both in FINE condition.

Bound in the publisher’s natural linen cloth with Hemingway’s facsimile signature printed on the front board and red and black typography on the spine. The book contains 471 pages with a deckled fore edge. The copyright page carries the required capital “A,” identifying the first printing. The later facsimile jacket reproduces the original $2.75 price, mountain and village artwork, and rear portrait of Hemingway. The coordinated slipcase reproduces the jacket’s front panel design and provides an attractive presentation while protecting the original volume.

Published in 1940, For Whom the Bell Tolls grew from Hemingway’s experiences reporting on the Spanish Civil War. The novel follows American explosives expert Robert Jordan during a dangerous mission behind enemy lines, combining wartime tension with reflections on loyalty, sacrifice, love, and mortality. It became one of Hemingway’s defining novels and remains an essential twentieth century American first edition. This is the true first printing, handsomely presented with a faithful facsimile jacket and slipcase while retaining the original 1940 volume.
