Fresh Sabal Mexicana (Texas Palmetto) Seeds: Harvested and Cleaned This Season
Grow your own Sabal mexicana, one of the hardiest and most attractive native palms for Texas and the southern U.S. These seeds were harvested fresh from a tree on my property and cleaned of all fruit pulp, so they\'re ready to plant right away.
What You\'ll Receive
- Freshly harvested Sabal mexicana seeds
- Pulp removed and cleaned, ready for sowing
- Harvested: October 2026
About the PlantSabal mexicana, also known as Texas palmetto, Mexican palmetto, or Rio Grande palmetto, is a stately fan palm with a single sturdy trunk and large, bold costapalmate fronds. It\'s valued for:
- Excellent heat and drought tolerance once established
- Cold hardiness, generally good down to the low teens °F (USDA zones 8b to 11)
- A slow-growing but long-lived, dramatic landscape specimen
- Tolerance of a wide range of soils, including clay
- Wildlife value, with flowers attractive to pollinators and fruit eaten by birds
Germination Tips
- Plant seeds about 1/2 to 1 inch deep in a well-draining mix
- Keep warm (ideally 80 to 90°F) and consistently moist, not soggy
- Germination is slow and irregular: expect anywhere from 1 to 3+ months, sometimes longer, so be patient
- Fresh seed can be sown outdoors in warm weather or started in deep pots or tubes, since palms develop a long taproot
Shipping
- Ships within 2 business days via USPS [First Class / Priority]
- Combined shipping available on multiple purchases
Please NoteGermination rates vary and can\'t be guaranteed, as results depend on growing conditions. Seeds are sold for planting only. Because of agricultural restrictions, I can only ship within the U.S. (please check your state\'s rules on plant material if you\'re unsure).
