Gigantic and heavy magical object in solid silver, Oman, Muslim, over 150 years old.

This type of traditional jewellery, believed to serve a protective function, was worn by the women of Oman for generations. It was generally incorporated into the hairstyle and attached to the braids, as shown in a photograph published in The Sultanate of Oman: A Heritage by Ann and Daryl Hill, published by Longman in 1977.

This ornament is generally called halqa, halka or halqa al-ra’s. It originates from the interior of the Sultanate of Oman and may, more specifically, come from the region of Bahla, Jabrin or Rustaq. Judging by its patina, we estimate its age at over 150 years; it may be considerably older still. At the centre is a carnelian agate carved with celestial and Muslim symbols. The three large, soldered hemispherical domes are positioned at the ends of the T-shaped division. They reinforce the three junction points while also providing three-dimensional decoration. The outer ring is covered with repeated punched motifs, triangles with foliate decoration, and small figures shaped like four petals or four rings.

The object measures 11.3 cm in diameter, approximately 4.45 inches, and weighs 87 g, approximately 3.07 oz.

The touchstone test produces a fine red streak, indicating that the object is made of excellent-quality silver, very likely with a purity of 95% or higher. Its size, weight, patina and symbolic decoration give it a talismanic visual power. The object exudes a certain power. It is as though one could feel its aura, and some force urged one to keep it close at home rather than sell it.----------------------------

(The Sultanate of Oman: A Heritage)
