Flower of Disease is filthy, heavy, slow-burning doom done exactly right.
Goatsnake take massive Sabbath-sized riffs, drag them through the California desert, and somehow make the whole thing feel both crushing and strangely soulful. Pete Stahl’s vocals give the record a character most doom bands never get close to, while Greg Anderson’s guitar work is just enormous.
Flower of Disease, Prayer for a Dying, Easy Greasy, El Coyote, The Dealer, The River — this is one of those albums that doesn’t need speed to hit hard. It just leans on you until the room feels smaller.
This is the 2010 Southern Lord / Burning World 180g reissue, bringing the long-out-of-print album back to vinyl after years of being unavailable. The album was originally released in 2000 and has become one of the defining records from the stoner/doom underground. Southern Lord itself describes the 2010 campaign as the official return of the album after more than eight years without a pressing.
The lineup here is ridiculous: Greg Anderson, Pete Stahl, Greg Rogers and Stuart Dahlquist, with guest contributions from Petra Haden and Dave Catching.
If you like doom that actually grooves instead of just crawling, Flower of Disease is an easy one to fall into. Heavy, weird, smoky and mean as hell.
