Reichenbach Hessen Germany Schlossberg Castle Ruins Litho Postcard 1903Description

Attractive1903 German multiview color lithographic postcard, “Gruss aus Reichenbach i/Hessen” (Greetings from Reichenbach, Hesse), featuring six illustrated views of this historic village near Hessisch Lichtenau, with elaborate floral ornamentation, decorative framing, and a German imperial eagle motif.

The illustrations include a panoramic view of Reichenbach, the village church (Kirche), a historical depiction ofReichenbach Castle dated 1606, the surviving castle ruins (Ruine des Reichenbacher Schlosses), the unusual rock formation known asDer Große Stein, and the woodedReichenbacher Schlossberg.

Burg Reichenbach, situated on the approximately 522-meter Schlossberg, originated in the 11th century and was the ancestral seat of the Counts of Reichenbach. The castle subsequently passed to the Landgraves of Hesse and served as an administrative center and hunting residence until the late 15th century. Largely destroyed around 1550, its surviving tower was restored and opened as an observation tower in1901, only two years before this postcard was mailed.

Published byC. Heller\'s Buchhandlung, Hessisch Lichtenau, with the publisher\'s imprint printed vertically along the left border. The postcard is particularly attractive for its detailed lithographic views, period typography, floral decoration, and early local-history subjects.

Postally used inMarch 1903, with a 5 Pfennig green Germania stamp and a Hessisch Lichtenau cancellation. Addressed toLehrer Schmidt in Rosenthal, Hesse, with a clearRosenthal, March 24, 1903receiving postmark. A lengthy contemporary handwritten message fills the lower portion of the illustrated side. An appealing early Germanundivided-back lithographic postcarddocumenting Reichenbach\'s historic landmarks and castle ruins.
