The Sunbathers – a hand-painted oil reproduction after Henry Scott Tuke’s 1921 work, in which two young bathers rest on pale sand beside theCornish sea. Tuke built the picture out of loose, light-struck strokes: the water and rocks are handled with an impressionist freedom while thefigures keep a classical calm. Our artist reproduced that contrast deliberately – the shimmering, broken colour of the background against thequiet modelling of the bodies – and kept the palette as fresh and high-keyed as the original. Henry Scott Tuke Biography

Henry Scott Tuke (1858-1929) was an English painter and photographer, born in York and raised in Falmouth, Cornwall. He trained at the Slade

School of Fine Art and in Florence and Paris, and settled at Falmouth, where he became associated with the Newlyn school of plein-air painters.

Tuke is best known for his open-air studies of young men and boys bathing, fishing and sailing on the Cornish coast, painted with an

impressionist touch and a classical sense of the figure. Elected a Royal Academician in 1914, he worked in both oil and watercolour, and his

reputation revived strongly in the late twentieth century.
